Harry Foster - Learn to flyfish at Toft Newton and catch a trout
Learning to fly fish for trout is an exciting prospect for all ages and at Toft we welcome you! The banks of the reservoir lend themselves perfectly to beginners, due to there being minimal obstruction for the back cast and with lots of room, a 'quiet corner' can always be found. Over the years we have encouraged and taught many new anglers to fish and the learning never stops - for any of us !!
Ring us to make a date and from there we'll handle everything. We'll advise you of what you need to bring with you and will lend you all the tackle, flies, net etc that you'll need for your day. We'll start by giving you an intense 1 to 1 fly casting session on grass, then move on to the water with advice on fly selection, knots, playing, landing & despatching your trout and answer any questions. Coaching will continue over the day and you'll be looked after on following visits. With 25 years experience we are here to help.

Weekly results week ending - 5th March

86 rods caught 205 fish
rod av 2.4

Quite a difficult week on the whole due to cold conditions once again prevailing coupled with a bit of a brown algal bloom colouring the water. Some sharp frosts slowing sport early on with the best time being late morning to early afternoon. The fish are extremely close in, perhaps due to the colour in the water and at times the takes come no more than a rod length out. The most successful anglers have been casting along the banks at 45 degrees with floating or intermediate lines and fishing a small leaded or goldhead nymph/lure on the point with black buzzers or diawl bachs on the droppers. Towards the end of the week sport improved as the sun brought some welcomed heat with afternoon temperatures to 10 degrees C - let's hope for more of the same.  Plenty of rainbows 5Ib+ stocked last week, so plenty coming out, the best being to first time Toft visitor Chris Grimbleby from Howden at 7Ib, he had 3 more over 5Ib.  Apologies for lateness of report, I've been at the the flyfishing show over the weekend, nice to see so many familiar friendly faces there.

Below is a reiteration of changes for 2010 for those of you that may have missed it.
- Small price increases due unfortunately to further fish feed price increases that generally dictate pricing down the line.
- The introduction of a catch & release only season ticket.
- The stipulation of barbless hooks for anglers intending to catch & release.(If you intend to fish, just catch and kill a limit bag and NOT catch & release, then you CAN use a barbed hook). Crushed barbs are acceptable. This is something that I have in the past left to the discretion of the angler but feel this can no longer be the case.
- Toft 'kill' tickets will now allow any fish to be taken and not just the first 2, 4 or 6 as was the case in previous years. Catch & release will be allowed but when the final fish of the bag limit is killed, fishing stops!

An exciting new fly fishing DVD has just been produced by a local TV company with an interest in angling. The film is presented by Lincolnshire Fly Shop proprietor Andy Hutson and features Reuben Page from the Environment Agency, fish farmer Rob Oliver from Olsten Trout Ltd, an Angling Trust representative, local anglers doing their thing and me & the dogs! Filmed on location at local fisheries I'm sure many of you will relate to this well produced footage. An ideal stocking filler perhaps? Visit the preview page on the DVD website HERE

View a speeded up 2 minute video of an interesting cloud that moved over Toft at the beginning of September, sounds a bit dull and probably is but if you've got nowt else to do it might be worth a look!? It's HERE

Older video stuff..... a sneeky look into Pablo's fly box, Birdmad Dean catching his first 'proper' trout and Steve Burns from Hull with a lovely conditioned tagged rainbow - see it HERE

A couple of vids you might like to look at - Andy Hutson from FLYTASTIC successfully 'stalking' a fry feeding brownie HERE

An interesting sequence from a DVD HERE just released, with a fry feeding sequence filmed at Toft in late 2005, a reminder that we've got some good sport to come, not just with perch hopefully !!

Compiled a bit of a video clip showing action from Toft, I've had to put music over the top of it to cover the colourful language used by one or two of its stars! You can watch it HERE

George Todd - Toft Newton wheelyboat user
With a mile of uninterrupted, unobstructed bank, a dozen boats and a wheely boat for disabled anglers use, Toft covers all tastes. Bank fishing is consistent throughout the season with fish responding well to all manner of fly fishing methods. Early & late season, fry patterns & lures such as the infamous concrete bowl, viva, appetiser and booby work well on slow sink lines. Spring and summer, floating lines are the order of the day with buzzer patterns, traditional nymphs & wet flies all producing fish.
Boat sport can be fantastic at Toft with a variety of techniques returning fish. 'Loch style' methods are great & exciting fun - fishing a short cast floating line in front of a drifting boat with three flies such as a Soldier Palmer, Invicta and Pheasant Tail nymph. When the fish are down, a variety of deep fished nymphs and lures will produce and are best fished from drifting boats to give a good chance of covering fish. Our boat ramp provides good accessibility for disabled anglers and staff are on hand to assist with use of the wheelyboat.

Competition fishing at Toft . The Toft Newton cup is held annually at the fishery in the late season and is fished from the bank. Hywel Morgan visited the fishery to host the first heat of the SCIERRA pairs boat fishing match. As you can see, he found time to catch a well mended Toft Rainbow! Several other events are held at the fishery including float tubing and club level fishing competitons. We offer discounts for block bookings available to clubs or individuals who wish to organise their own matches. Toft is a Trout Fisherman magazine Troutmasters water and fish-offs are held to decide seasonal winners Hywel Morgan visiting Toft for the SCIERRA pairs match at Toft
